The Museum of Science and Technology was made principal museum for technology materials in 1995. The care of all objects of technological culture in our Republic is under the auspices of the Museum of Science and Technology. One of its tasks, within its principal activities, is identifying cultural assets that are not owned by the Museum but by various institutions and individuals. In this way, to date, about 60 objects have been protected and registered in the Registry of Cultural Assets Outside of the Museum Fund. Their condition is monitored by an expert survey that is conducted each year.
In this way the Museum of Science and Technology protects very valuable objects of technological culture - in some cases preventing their destruction or removal from the country. The Museum instructs owners on measures of technical preservation and elevates awareness of the significance of preserving technological cultural heritage. In this way, protection has been provided for items such as the collection of Tito’s automobiles, the collection of television equipment used at the time when television started in our country, and for nine ships from the turn of the century. It is especially interesting to note that some protected objects still perform their functions. Still in use are items such as the jacquard looms which transform patterns from punched cards to silk table cloths, napkins and bed linen; and the steam machine which has continually operated since 1871, driving the lift of the mine pit in Senjski mine.
